AUTOEROTICISM: HOW CARS RELATE TO OUR SEXUALITY AND INTIMACY | PSYCHOLOGY OF DRIVING

The term "psychology" refers to studying thoughts, feelings, and behaviors related to how people think about themselves, others, the world around them, and their place within it. It is also the scientific study of behavior, cognitive processes, emotions, perceptions, motivations, beliefs, attitudes, personalities, and interpersonal relationships between individuals and groups of people. Psychologists seek to understand the relationship between psychological factors and human behavior, drawing upon methods from research, observation, measurement, experimentation, assessment, and statistics. Psychology has many subfields that focus on different areas such as abnormal, child, clinical, developmental, educational, forensic, health, industrial/organizational, personality, and social psychology. The field includes both applied and theoretical aspects, examining topics like consciousness, memory, language, emotion, motivation, learning, creativity, intelligence, decision making, stress, anxiety, depression, aggression, relationships, gender roles, cultural differences, group dynamics, leadership, persuasion, brain functioning, and more.

Automotive Sexuality Automobiles Arousal Eroticism Psychosexuality Fetish Fantasies Attraction Confusion Passion

Psychological studies on sexuality and automobiles have been conducted since at least the early 20th century, when Sigmund Freud first hypothesized that a car represented the female genitalia and an engine symbolized male potency. In this way, driving or riding in a car could be seen as a form of autoeroticism. Later psychoanalytic studies explored how cars are related to various stages of psychosexual development, especially during adolescence when teenagers may experience intense sexual feelings associated with driving. Other scholars noted that the sounds of motors can trigger sexual arousal by mimicking the rhythmic breathing patterns of orgasm. Still others suggested that fantasy about cars is connected to fetishes, including those involving wheels, engines, and metallic surfaces. These ideas persist today and have led to a popular interest in "auto-erotic" videos and other media.

Despite widespread fascination with cars and sex, there has not yet been much research into their relationship. Some experts believe they do not share enough similarities to constitute any meaningful connection between them.

The association between cars and sex can also lead to confusion, such as when men become embarrassed about having erotic dreams about their vehicles. The term "carsexuality" refers to attraction to automobiles, which some people find appealing due to their shape, design, speed, or other qualities. A recent study found that women who reported being more attracted to cars were less likely to identify as heterosexual than those who did not share this preference. This suggests that there may be a link between non-traditional gender identity and attraction to automobiles. At the same time, most people seem to agree that cars offer a unique combination of power, control, status, and freedom that makes them alluring for many different reasons.

Sports car enthusiasts often describe feeling powerful while behind the wheel, which could contribute to an erotic sensation. Similarly, some drivers report experiencing intense passion after taking tight turns at high speeds. Whatever the reason, it seems clear that there are psychological factors involved in our relationship with cars beyond simply transportation or functionality.
