AUTOMOTIVE DRIVING & PSYCHOLOGICAL SEXUALITY: EXPLORING HOW MIRRORS ENHANCE SELFIDENTITY, POWER, AND ATTRACTION

There are many ways that mirrors can play a role in our experience of driving cars. One way is through how they help create feelings of self-awareness and identify. This is especially true when it comes to our relationship with our bodies, including our sexuality. In this essay, I will explore why mirrors might enhance our psychological experiences while driving a car.

Mirrors have long been used to help drivers see what's behind them, but there may be more to their role than just providing visibility. For one thing, looking at ourselves in the rearview mirror may make us feel more confident and attractive, which can increase our sense of power and control. As social animals, we often look for validation from others, so seeing our reflection in the mirror may give us an extra boost of confidence that can translate into greater assertiveness on the road. It's even possible that some people become so comfortable with themselves in the driver's seat that they start to imagine themselves as powerful figures who command respect from other drivers.

Looking at yourself in a mirror can also lead to confusion about your identity. If you suddenly catch sight of yourself after getting dressed up for a date or meeting someone special, you might find yourself wondering if you really look like that person in real life. Similarly, watching yourself drive can create a disconnect between who you think you are and how you actually appear. You may not realize how aggressively you're accelerating or braking until you watch yourself do it. And seeing yourself flinching or swerving out of the way of another vehicle can cause anxiety that leads to panic attacks or worse.

There is evidence that suggests that certain car models are more likely to activate our erotic centers than others. Research has shown that female drivers are more aroused by sports cars than sedans because they suggest masculine strength and power (Fisher et al., 2006). Similarly, men tend to prefer SUVs over smaller cars because they symbolize dominance and ruggedness (Jankowski & Swami, 2017). Even without these associations, simply feeling like we're in control of something big and powerful can increase sexual excitement.

One study found that couples who felt more confident behind the wheel were more likely to have sex afterwards (Rothman & Fogel, 2013).

Then, mirrors inside cars can enhance our psychological experiences in many ways. They can help us feel more attractive and confident, but they can also cause confusion and anxiety.

Their design may play a role in our feelings of sexual attraction towards other people and objects related to cars.
