AUTOMOTIVE SEXUALITY: HOW CARS ARE CONNECTED TO OUR IDENTITIES, DESIRE, AND AROUSAL

Psychology is a field that studies human behavior, thoughts, emotions, and motivations. It is an interdisciplinary science because it uses methods and theories from various disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, biology, neuroscience, economics, etc. The psychological study of cars has been largely neglected despite their central role in modern society. They are essential for transportation and personal mobility. But they also play significant roles in our everyday lives, impacting how we think about ourselves and others. They influence our identities, social statuses, desires, and attitudes.

Some people identify themselves as car enthusiasts, while others see them as a symbol of freedom and power. Cars have become objects of desire, fetishization, and sexual fantasies. This paper discusses these issues based on empirical research.

Automotive Sexuality

Cars are intimately related to sex since they are used for transportation between places where people can engage in sexual activities. Sexuality involves eroticism, arousal, attraction, and passion. These qualities are often associated with automobiles because of their speed, power, and performance. People may feel excited by driving fast cars or watching them in movies or video games. Some even use automobiles during foreplay or in bedroom activities. In one study, participants were shown pictures of different vehicles and asked to rate their level of arousal. They reported higher levels when seeing sports cars, convertibles, SUVs, luxury cars, and vintage models. Another study found that women who drive sports cars tend to be more attractive and confident than those who don't.

Psychosexuality and Fetishes

Psychosexuality is the connection between psychology and sexuality. It refers to how our psyche shapes our sexual preferences, thoughts, and behaviors. People may develop fetishes for specific parts of automobiles, such as engines, tires, wheels, or exhaust pipes. These fetishes can be due to childhood experiences or cultural influences.

Some children may play with toy cars and develop associations with certain features. Adults may associate certain parts of a car with masculinity or femininity.

Attraction and Confusion

Attraction is an essential aspect of human behavior. People are drawn to objects and persons based on physical appearance, personality traits, social status, etc. Automobiles can create confusion about what we find attractive since they are not living beings. Some people may be attracted to specific colors, designs, or types of cars without fully understanding why. This confusion can lead to misinterpretations and misunderstandings in relationships.

Partners may feel jealous or threatened by each other's attraction to particular vehicles. They may also have difficulty communicating their feelings, leading to conflict and breakups.
