ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION AS A CONSEQUENCE OF SEXUAL COMPARISON ANXIETY FROM PERFORMANCE BENCHMARKING

How does performance benchmarking mirror sexual comparison anxiety?

Performance benchmarking is the process of measuring an individual's performance against a standard or goal, often to assess progress or determine areas for improvement. In this context, it can be seen as a way to compare one's own performance to that of others, leading to feelings of inadequacy or inferiority if the person falls short of the desired level. This phenomenon has been observed in many different fields, from sports to academics to business.

Recent research has begun to explore how similar comparisons may manifest in the realm of human sexual behavior.

One study found that men who frequently compared their sexual prowess to that of their peers were more likely to experience performance anxiety during sex, which could ultimately lead to erectile dysfunction and reduced satisfaction. The authors proposed that this anxiety stems from a fear of being judged as "inadequate" based on subjective standards set by society or personal expectations. Similarly, women who frequently engaged in self-objectification, or comparing themselves physically to other women, were also more likely to report low sexual desire and less arousal during partnered sex.

Another study examined the impact of social media use on sexual comparison anxiety among young adults. Participants were asked about their usage of platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, where highly sexualized content is commonplace, and then surveyed on their levels of body image distress and sexual anxiety. Interestingly, those with higher usage rates reported greater body image dissatisfaction and sexual concerns, suggesting that exposure to idealized representations of physical beauty may contribute to performance benchmarking.

These findings suggest that performance benchmarking may have negative consequences for both male and female sexual functioning, potentially resulting in decreased pleasure and increased stress. It highlights the importance of recognizing and addressing feelings of inadequacy when they arise, whether through therapy or communication with partners, as well as developing healthy coping mechanisms for dealing with pressure to perform.
