To answer this research question, a qualitative approach was taken. Participants were recruited from social media groups dedicated to discussions of automotive topics. They consisted of both men and women who identified as having experience operating manual transmissions. All participants had access to a vehicle equipped with a manual transmission, which they drove regularly. They completed online surveys that explored their experiences with driving manual transmissions and any associations they made between them and sex or sexuality. The survey questions asked about the frequency of manual transmission usage, the types of vehicles driven, and whether or not participants experienced increased levels of arousal while using a manual transmission.
