The Unconscious Mind and the Car Seat
The positioning of seats in cars plays an important role in creating psychological arousal. Higher seats can create feelings of superiority while lower seats may cause submission. When someone sits in a higher seat they may feel more powerful or dominant which could lead to increased levels of testosterone. This could be related to the car's engine power, but it is also true that sitting higher increases visibility and gives drivers a better view of their surroundings, which may give them a sense of control.
This does not necessarily mean that high seating positions are more attractive than low ones. One study found that men who were placed in a high seat did not have an increase in desire for sex afterward.
Psychosexuality and Car Seats
Psychosexuality refers to the connection between sexual behavior and development stages. According to Freudian theory, people go through various stages during childhood that shape their personality and identity. The oral stage involves sucking and biting, the anal stage focuses on controlling bodily functions, and the phallic stage concerns genitals. These stages influence how people view objects such as cars, including their seats. Someone with a strong oral fixation might prefer a vehicle with a low center console so they can reach down and touch themselves, while someone with an excessively rigid anal-retentive attitude would enjoy driving a sports car because of its performance capabilities.
Fetishizing Cars
Some individuals may develop fetishes around cars based on specific features like the color, make, model, or interior design. A common fantasy is to be trapped inside a car and unable to move until a rescue comes along. Other common car-related fantasies include being driven by someone else or engaging in sexual acts while traveling at high speeds. People may also become aroused when watching others interact with their vehicles, such as pumping gasoline, changing tires, or washing them. This could be due to the psychological association between these actions and intimacy.
Attraction and Intimacy
The position of one's seat can affect attraction toward other drivers or passengers. Sitting close together in a small space creates intimacy which can lead to increased physical contact.
Sitting farther apart decreases this closeness.
Some studies suggest that people who are more physically attracted to each other tend to choose compatible seating positions.
Couples who are attracted to each other will often sit side-by-side instead of facing one another. The distance between the driver's seat and passenger seat may also impact how much eye contact occurs during conversation, which is important for building intimacy.
There are many factors that influence our psychological response to cars and their seats, including unconscious desires related to power, control, and intimacy. While certain positions may create feelings of dominance or submission, it does not necessarily mean they are more appealing than others. Understanding these complex connections between cars and sexuality requires further research into the unconscious mind.
