THE EMOTIONAL MEANING OF CARS: EXPLORING THE LINK BETWEEN SEXUAL SCRIPTING AND EROTICISM IN AUTOMOBILES

Most people agree that cars have an emotional component to them. This is because they represent freedom, independence, status, power, control, speed, and many more feelings. But how many car enthusiasts would say their cars are also about sex? And why are some cars associated with masculinity while others can be seen as feminine? The answers to these questions lie within psychology's understanding of sex and sexuality.

Sexual Scripting and Erotic Education in Cars

Sexual scripts refer to socially constructed rules for appropriate gender behavior during sexual encounters.

Men should initiate, take charge, and pursue women who resist before yielding to romance. Women should flirt and tease, dress seductively, and submit when conquered. These beliefs shape what happens between people based on their gender identities and social roles. They help explain why men often feel threatened by women taking leadership or why some women may find it difficult to embrace their assertiveness.

The same principles apply to cars. Automakers cultivate erotic education through advertising campaigns that associate specific vehicles with sensual experiences, such as Ferraris with speed and Lamborghinis with passion. Some manufacturers even create entire lines of "sex" cars that appeal to particular desires.

The Corvette Z06 has a unique design and performance that conveys aggression and potency; the BMW M4 exudes sleekness and allure; and the Porsche 918 Spyder excites drivers with its powerful engine and bold curves.

Automotive journalists often contribute to this process by praising certain cars for having "sexy" qualities. They may describe them as 'muscular', 'curvy', or 'seductive'. In doing so, they imply the vehicle is capable of arousing interest or stirring up emotions - which helps reinforce stereotypes about masculinity/femininity and encourages consumers to buy based on lust rather than practicality.

Automobile Eroticism: What Drives Attraction?

Sexual attraction towards an object can be explained in terms of psychosexual development. This theory states that early childhood experiences influence later sexual behavior. If you're exposed to something repeatedly during infancy (such as your father driving), it can become associated with pleasure and desire over time.

If someone was born into a family who loves muscle cars, they might develop an attraction to them due to conditioning. Similarly, if someone grows up around sports cars, they could find these vehicles appealing because of their high-performance capabilities.

Not everyone shares these associations. Some people prefer economy cars or SUVs for reasons unrelated to sex. Yet, even when cars aren't explicitly sexualized, they still have erotic potential. When we see an attractive car, our brains release dopamine (the feel-good neurotransmitter) and adrenaline (which increases heart rate). These chemicals create a sense of excitement and pleasure similar to being in love or lustful. So, while no one would say a minivan is sexy per se, it still has the ability to turn us on physically and emotionally.

Car Fetishism: The Sexual Objectification of Cars

Car fetishes are common among automotive enthusiasts. A fetish is an intense obsession with non-sexual objects or body parts that causes arousal and fantasies. People may fetishize certain makes, models, colors, designs, or features - such as red Ferraris or leather seats. It's unclear why this happens; some researchers think it could be a form of sublimation where one redirects desires onto something else to avoid guilt/shame. Others believe it's simply about personal preference or identity formation. Whatever the case may be, it's clear that car fetishes exist and can be quite powerful.

Some individuals develop an emotional attachment to their cars that goes beyond simple appreciation. They might name them, talk to them, and treat them like living things. This behavior indicates a level of intimacy that could indicate a personality disorder known as "objectophilia".

Most people who own cars don't experience anything more than infatuation unless they have strong sex drives or unresolved issues.

Automobiles contain both literal and symbolic sexuality. Their design, performance, and social meanings all contribute to how we perceive them sexually. While many factors influence attraction towards vehicles, psychological theories suggest that early experiences play a significant role in forming preferences later on.

Car fetishes exist but should not be confused with other mental health conditions.

As for automakers, they benefit from cultivating erotic scripts by creating desire among consumers. By associating specific models with sex appeal, they can increase sales and market share while also satisfying cultural expectations about masculinity/femininity.
