Sexuality refers to an individual's physical, emotional, romantic, and psychological attitudes towards another person, self, or both. The word "sex" is often associated with physical intimacy between individuals who may be heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, or asexual. Sex can also refer to non-physical interactions such as flirting, touching, kissing, hugging, holding hands, cuddling, and sharing private moments together. Eroticism is a term used to describe intense feelings of pleasure or excitement that are associated with one's sexual desires. Eroticism typically occurs during sexual contact but can also occur outside of it.
Some people enjoy watching pornography or reading erotica. Arousal is a term used to describe the state of being physically aroused or excited by something. This could include seeing someone attractive, touching them, smelling their scent, hearing their voice, or feeling their skin against yours. Automobiles have been known to cause arousal in many individuals due to their shape, color, sound, or movement. Psychosexuality is a concept developed by Sigmund Freud which suggests that human development is divided into five stages, each of which involves a different part of the body. These stages include oral, anal, phallic, latent, and genital. During the oral stage, infants focus on sucking, chewing, and swallowing. During the anal stage, children learn how to control their bowels. In the phallic stage, boys begin to identify with their penis while girls identify with their vagina. The latent stage occurs when children become more independent from their parents and begin developing an interest in sex.
The genital stage begins around puberty and continues through adulthood. Fetishes refer to objects or activities that an individual finds sexually stimulating. Some common fetishes include leather, latex, high heels, and BDSM (bondage, discipline, submission, masochism). Fantasies are stories or images that an individual imagines happening between themselves and another person. Confusion can arise when fantasies do not align with reality, leading to frustration or disappointment. Passion refers to intense feelings of love or desire for someone else. Passion often accompanies sexual attraction but can also occur without it. When two people come together, they create an interplay of dominance and submission. One partner may be dominant while the other is submissive. This dynamic can change throughout the encounter depending on what both partners want. Ordering one's partner to "slam" them hard is an example of domination because it implies taking control over their movements. Submission is giving up control to someone else in order to please them.
